What I Wish I Knew Before Switching from Non-IT to IT
What I Wish I Knew Before Switching from Non-IT to IT
Maybe you work in retail. Maybe you teach. Maybe you are in sales, admin, customer service, or something else. You want to move into IT. But you have no tech degree. You do not know where to start.
I have been there too. I made this switch myself, from a non-tech job into IT and finance. I worked at IBM, Aegis, and TCS along the way. It worked out well. But it took longer than it needed to. Nobody told me these simple things early on. So I am telling you now.
Lesson 1: You Don’t Need a Tech Degree
I used to think IT was only for engineers. I was wrong. Many IT jobs need good communication. They need people who stay calm and follow steps. Teaching gives you this. Retail gives you this. Sales gives you this. So does a BPO job. I just did not know how to say it in an interview.
Lesson 2: Don’t Aim for the Hardest Job First
I wanted to become a big developer straight away. That was a mistake. It is better to start small. Try a support job. Try a process job. Get inside the company first. Learn as you go. You do not need the hardest job on day one.
Lesson 3: Your Old Job Is Not a Weakness
I used to hide my own background. I thought it looked bad. That was wrong too. Managing a classroom. Closing a sale. Handling angry customers. Handling paperwork on time. Working under pressure. These are all real skills. IT companies want people with these skills. Once I started saying this in interviews, things got easier. It does not matter what your old job was. Talk about it, don’t hide it.
Lesson 4: Learn One Skill at a Time
I tried to learn many things at once. A little bit here. A little bit there. In the end, I was not good at anything. What worked better was different. I picked one skill. I learned it well. Then I moved to the next one.
Lesson 5: Try Moving Inside Your Own Company First
Some of my biggest steps happened inside the company I already worked for. I did not always need to go outside. If your company has an IT team, ask them for a chance. Ask to shadow someone. Ask about a transfer. Try this before looking outside.
Lesson 6: Practice Telling Your Story
I could write an okay resume. But in interviews, I struggled to speak clearly about myself. Why do you want this switch? What can you bring? Practice saying this out loud. This matters more than people think.

The Switch Is Not Easy. But It Is Possible.
I will not lie to you. This switch takes time. Some interviews will not go well. That is normal. But every mistake I made could have been avoided. Someone just needed to tell me first. That is why I do this work now. So other people don’t have to learn it the hard way.
